Railway culvert
Culvert, screen and outfall manual, (CIRIA C786) published by CIRIA in 2019, defines a culvert as: 'A covered channel or pipe which prevents the obstruction of a watercourse or drainage path by an artificial construction.'
It defines a railway culvert as: ‘Used either to carry watercourses beneath the permanent way or other infrastructure, or to carry surface water from the same. Most of the asset stock is over 100 years old and is mainly of brick or masonry construction. There are 66 000 culverts on the operational railway system in the UK.’
